For this workshop, British-German artists collective Gob Squad along with eight Bombay-based interdisciplinary artists travelled back in time and explored the year 1984. In 1984 Gob Squad were teenagers, watching music videos on MTV, while there was a cold war and the prospect of nuclear annihilation felt very real. But how was it for others? And what did they associate with that time? Were they even born? If they could go back in time and change anything they wanted, what would it be?

As part of Gob Squad’s newest project “1984: Back to No Future”, they did a series of residencies and collaborations across the globe with the aim to broaden their narrative and see the world from a different perspective—and they did not let a global pandemic stop them! This workshop was an integral part of it. It unfolded virtually, on Zoom, across time zones and geographies and is a memory of an extraordinary moment in history, we collectively experienced.
